Known as the “miracle bean”, lupini beans are a lightly pickled Mediterranean legume snack with a rich history. Lupini seeds were found in ancient Egyptian tombs, signifying the Egyptians considered lupini worthy of the afterlife. But it was the Romans who truly popularized lupini. Roman warriors relied on lupini beans as a primary source of portable protein while on long campaigns. Since then, they’ve been a popular appetizer snack in the region – often enjoyed with a drink before dinner, similar to Japan’s edamame.
